Charleston, The Holy City, Easter / Passover 2011
Greetings from Charleston, The Holy City, this Easter morning. Charleston is of course known as "The Holy City", one reason is certainly the number and variety of churches throughout the city and prominent church steeples rising over the cityscape. But an even more important reason was the religious tolerance available in Charleston to the practice of different religions.
Charleston was one of the first colonial cities to allow Jewish people to practice their faith without restriction and Kahal Kadosh Beth Elohim Synagogue, founded in 1749 is the fourth oldest Jewish Congregation in America.
