The first day of Fall in Charleston, or do you prefer Autumn
... will actually be very short since it begins at 11:09 PM this evening and it won't feel very different from the last day of summer.
The seasons of Charleston are interesting. Summer should hang around until at least sometime in October and while the days might still be warm, the nights have just started to cool off a little if you think lows in the 60's are cool. Once the peak of hurricane season is over, the humidity will drop and fall or autumn is a long and glorious season. And while I'm on the subject, we have been very fortunate again thus far this year with no storms threatening Charleston thus far and let's hope and pray that continues.
Winter is of course, very short and very mild and yes, we did have snow last winter for the first time in 10 to 20 years depending on how you measure, flurries or accumulation; The Great Charleston snowstorm tallied four to six inches depending on where you live and it did melt later that same day. There is no doubt that Spring is the most beautiful season in Charleston by far and then we have our Summer season, the early part hot and dry, the latter part hot and wet.
Speaking of Summer, Summers over at the White House as Larry Summers is leaving his economic post. Bye Larry and let's hope the new guy or gal that Obama appoints can create some jobs.
When people relocate to Charleston especially from the Northeast or Midwest, many are surprised that there aren't a lot of colorful trees at this time of year. But basically, the live oaks, pines, palms and palmetto trees found throughout the Charleston area don't have significant color changes or lose their leaves like the maples and other trees from back home. Sure, some trees do lose their leaves and for those of you who love to rake, you'll certainly have your opportunity to do so but also a little later in the year than you might be used to.
But back to that all important question, do you prefer Fall or Autumn. After all, leaves fall and that's no fun and isn't Autumn an absolutely beautiful name.
