Popcorn (blown) ceilings are so out of style
... so why do we still see them around.
Back in the day, builders skimped a little on construction costs by spraying an acoustic material more commonly known as a popcorn (or blown) ceiling. And we've come to expect that if you are looking at homes for sale in Charleston that were built in the 70's or 80's that you might find popcorn ceilings but it is much more surprising to see it in homes that were built as recently as 5 or 10 years ago.
Some buyers don't mind the textured ceilings and that's fine but some buyers might plan to renovate or update the home and give it a more contemporary look by removing the popcorn texture and even though it is a real mess to remove, sometimes you can do it yourself but if you discover asbestos you probably should hire a professional to do the job.
Here is an excellent article on how to test for asbestos and remove popcorn ceilings from The Natural Handyman. (Please be sure to follow local laws.)
