Hurricane season begins today [Howard on list of named storms]

hurricane season 2010After several mild years, forecasters are predicting an active hurricane season. Just about everyone who is considering relocating to Charleston asks me about hurricanes and whether I am worried about living here. The short answer is no; all you have to do is notice that all kinds of weather disasters seem to occur just about everywhere and if there is a good thing about a hurricane, it's simply that generally there is a lot of advance notice.

Now that doesn't mean that you shouldn't make preparations and remain alert. While the hurricane season runs from June 1 through November 30, high season is generally mid August to late September.

And if you are watching The Weather Channel and Jim Cantore is reporting from Folly Beach, that means trouble ahead for the Charleston area. I like AccuWeather for online coverage and especially the video blogs by Frank Strait.

Stay safe this season and let's hope that Howard is not a memorable name ...

for hurricanes, that is Wink
