A curb appeal tip for selling your home, don't hide the front door

Charleston real estate, selling your home in CharlestonDid you ever notice how many homes listed for sale in the Charleston MLS have foliage that has grown to the point where the front door is hidden. With the many choices of homes for sale in Charleston that buyers have today, buyers may be choosing which homes they don't want to see rather than selecting those homes that are most interesting to them.

Take the home at your left as an example. It may be a very nice home but can you spot the front door in this picture. Basically, the hidden front door to this home just doesn't make it feel like it welcomes you to visit. And a buyer who doesn't feel welcome from just this picture might not schedule an appointment to view your home.

Now, even if you aren't currently selling your home, ask yourself if your front door is hidden as well. It's quite possible that you aren't welcoming your family, friends and neighbors to visit you.

My wife and I enjoy gardening and we have a lot of foliage around our home. Some of it has grown too large for the space we originally planted it and recently, we dug out several larger shrubs that were (you guessed it) hiding our front door. And while it offered additional shade for the front porch during hot summer days, many of our neighbors have commented very positively about how much better and more inviting our home now looks.

One more thing that we probably don't like to think about very much but I would bet that if crime statistics were ever compiled on the criteria of overgrown foliage hiding the front door, they might in fact show that robbers prefer to break into homes where they can't be spotted.
