Daniel Island, an urban / suburban Charleston community

Downtown Daniel Island A client recently asked me if I could live anywhere, where would I live. Not everyone is as fortunate to be able to live anywhere they want but I am and chose to live in Charleston. He went on to ask where in Charleston I would live if I could live anywhere in the area and I quickly responded that I would live on Daniel Island.

Of course, if my wife is reading this, she might ask how come we aren't living on Daniel Island but that's another story for another day. My wife is a bit more urban and I'm a little more suburban and Daniel Island fits that perfectly with eight traditionally designed suburban neighborhoods surrounding a downtown urban core.

Daniel Island has been developed as a master planned community with hiking and biking paths, sports facilities and hundreds of acres of parks. There are rivers, creeks, a private nature preserve, crabbing docks, community boat ramps (and a marina opening soon). A variety of businesses and services are available to residents including shops, restaurants, medical centers and a Publix supermarket. Several of the largest Charleston area employers are located on Daniel Island and a new elementary and middle school recently opened joining Bishop England, one of the finest private high schools in the State of South Carolina.

You'll find townhomes and condos located at the Island's center and in some cases, adding to the urban flavor, some are located above businesses and shops. The eight distinctive neighborhoods include Barfield Park, Center Park, Cochran Park, Codner's Ferry Park, Daniel Island Park, Etiwan Park, Pierce Park and Smythe Park. Daniel Island Park is located at the northern end of the island and is a private Country Club neighborhood featuring 36 holes of championship golf and a swim, tennis and fitness facility.

All builders on Daniel Island are carefully screened for quality and a strict Architectural Review Board must approve all design plans. Daniel Island has consistently won awards and accolades including The Urban Land Institute Award for Excellence, named among the top golf course communities by both Travel and Leisure and Golf Magazine, won a Best in American Living Award for smart growth by the National Association of Home Builders and Where To Retire Magazine twice included Daniel Island in America's Top 100 Master Planned Communities.
