Winter foliage and colorful blooms in Charleston

While the winter weather in Charleston today is expected to be more like spring with sunshine and highs in the 70's, the winter foliage and colorful blooms would still be spectacular even with more normal weather conditions. Many visitors and those who are considering relocation to Charleston are amazed at just how beautiful it is here. In fact, one of my clients from New Jersey whose child attends the College of Charleston was telling me yesterday that his son cut short his Xmas vacation to return to Charleston because the weather was miserable up north and so beautiful here.

Here are a few photos from our winter garden to warm you up if you happen to be reading this from the cold and snowy north. Our camellia japonica is just starting to bloom, the cute little white flowers from one of our fragrant tea olives and the spectacular little pink ribbon-like petals from one of our loropetalum and a reliable favorite for Charleston winter flowers, some pansies.

I live in Michigan and have been keeping an eye on real estate in Charleston. Photos like these are probably the most inspiring reason to move south! We're up here in -15 degree weather and the thought of seeing any living plant again seems so far off! Anyway, thanks for this little bright spot in my day. As soon as I can sell my house up here and find a job there, I'll start packing my bags! Anyone want to trade? (ha!)

Christine, thanks for stopping by and I'm glad to have brightened your day. But as I write this, we were below freezing last night and the geraniums had to be covered. But we'll recover nicely with sunshine and the 40's today and warmer once again in the days ahead.

Our employment and housing markets are obviously in better shape than Michigan (along with our weather) so I'm not sure many Charlestonians will take you up on your trade offer :)

Yes, your employment and housing markets are much better! I have a touch of sticker shock when I look at the prices of homes in Charleston compared to Michigan. We've got a low cost of living here...my house here would go for about 160,000. To buy something comparable there I'd have to fork over probably 240,000. But you can't put a price on warm weather and southern way of life! It would be well worth it.

Christine, you must have a very nice home because $240,000 will buy you a wonderful home in the Charleston area. By the way, our property taxes are low.

You get a little more house for your money a little further away from the city center. So get your house sold, get a job and come down, you'll love it here.
