It's April 15th, do you need more time to file your taxes
It's nobody's favorite day of the year again, April 15th and many people are doing all the last minute tax stuff in order to file their return.
I stopped in Starbucks yesterday for a coffee and was amused to see someone taking up 2 tables and several chairs and had receipts spread out everywhere trying to make sense of what might be deductible.
By filing form 4868, you can get a 6 month extension to file your paperwork. The catch is that the taxes are still due today so when you file the extension, you should send in your best estimate of how much you might owe. Otherwise, interest and penalties might be applied. The IRS is nice enough to tell you that if you don't have all the money, pay as much as you can to minimize the interest and penalties.
Oh, and what about those silly little economic stimulus checks the government will be sending out. The bad news is that if you need more time to file your taxes, your check will be delayed until your tax return is processed.
