Think green, some easy solutions
If you like the idea of saving money and resources, a few simple home improvements now will result in benefits to you now and when you ultimately sell your home since buyers are looking for energy efficient homes and lower electric bills.
Replace incandescent bulbs with compact fluorescent bulbs. Soon to be mandated, compact fluorescent bulbs require 75 percent less energy, produce 75 percent less heat and last up to 10 times longer.
Plug leaks. Caulk and add weather-stripping to windows and doors to stop heat and air conditioning losses. Use spray foam insulation to fill gaps, especially between the living space and unheated areas such as the attic and garage.
Unplug chargers, power adapters and appliances (including your computer) when they are not in use and turn off lights in those rooms not being used. Consider installing wireless controls for lighting and thermostats.
Reduce your water usage and lower your water heater temperature. Install low-flow shower heads, high-efficiency, and low-flow toilets. The average tank style water heater uses about 5 percent less energy for every 10 degrees Fahrenheit you reduce the temperature, according to the Department of Energy.
