October 19, it's my anniversary too!

October 19 is certainly known for the stock market crash in 1987 and with the 20 year anniversary and the today's stock market in precarious position, lots of commentary regarding comparisons are being made between then and now.

But October 19 is also a very important date in my life. My wife Polly and I celebrated our wedding on the beach in Hilton Head Island in 2002 so today is our 5th anniversary. I just looked up the traditional gift for 5 years and it is wood, however, Polly likes shiny gifts so I don't think wood will do.

Incidentally, there is a wonderful interactive chart of the events on Black Monday and Terrible Tuesday at WSJ Online. Click here.

We don't have a chart of our honeymoon activities. Wink

Mike, thank you. By the way, we'll have a little better day than the stock market, almost a 370 point drop to celebrate the 20th anniversary, however, on a percentage basis, only 2.65%, not the 20+ percent of 1987.

That's funny I was watching the trading curbs kick in on CNBC when I wrote earlier.

I did take a small position today though after sitting on the sidelines in cash for the past 6 months.

Wish me luck!

Mike I wish you well and I am not a financial advisor nor do I offer investment advice.

However, having said that, with the housing and credit markets a little distressed (I figured you would enjoy my "spin" on the current environment) but please realize that all real estate is local and the Charleston South Carolina real estate market is in much better shape than the previously overheated markets in Florida, California, Arizona and Nevada.

When you see oil hitting $90, world politics in turmoil, etc., etc., there is no way the stock market should be hitting new highs recently and is long overdue for a major correction, why it hasn't happened yet I have no idea.

I'm favoring cash but I do wish you luck, maybe you can take some winnings off the table and buy some Charleston real estate :)

My wife's flight home is delayed as is usual for Friday but thankfully, we have the weekend to celebrate, I have no clients to take care of and only one contract to negotiate.
