Coastal South Carolina counties are growing rapidly
The Charleston South Carolina real estate market and coastal South Carolina have some of the fastest growing counties in the nation according to the U.S. Census Bureau. Locally, Dorchester County including Summerville and parts of North Charleston ranked 48th based on the percentage increase in the number of houses. The number of homes in Dorchester County increased by 5.5% while both Charleston County and Berkeley County each gained 3.3%.
Good job growth, mild weather, excellent hospitals and medical care, lower property taxes than many other states and affordable housing are often cited as the primary reasons for growth throughout the Charleston area. Dorchester County is in a very favorable position for growth because of the excellent reputation of the Dorchester II school district and homes are generally more affordable in the Summerville area than similar houses in either Charleston or Mount Pleasant.
The Carolina coast is growing rapidly as well. Myrtle Beach in Horry County was the 12th fastest growing county in the nation with a 7.6% increase and Beaufort County including Beaufort and Hilton Head Island ranked 40th with a 5.9% increase. Many retirees are relocating to both of these areas as well as the Charleston area.
