Ethics and real estate
As part of a real estate agent's license renewal, mandatory continuing education is a requirement. There are core courses and elective courses available for you to choose from. Since everyone waits until the last moment leading up to June 30th, you have to figure out your schedule and coordinate it with classes that will be both interesting and beneficial to your career.
I found 2 ethics classes that looked informative and were offered at times that I could attend. I registered online and immediately after I registered, I received a telephone call from Sherry Martin from the education department at CTAR (Charleston Trident Association of Realtors) asking me if I was really sure I wanted to take 2 ethics classes and wouldn't I want to take something less boring for my second class. I explained why I signed up for both and laughed, telling her that maybe I would become more ethical than some of the other real estate agents in the Charleston area for having taken 2 classes.
So yesterday afternoon, I took the first class and it was wonderful. First, they changed instructors at the last moment and I was very fortunate that David Jaffee, an entertaining speaker and excellent teacher, was the substitute. David has an extensive background as both a Realtor and a mortgage loan officer as well as significant involvement with CTAR and SCAR (South Carolina Association of Realtors) committees.
The highlights of the course were the case studies and there was interesting discussion of the ethical considerations when dealing with multiple offers, agency representation, procuring cause and designated agency. I hope the second class I take early next month will be just as rewarding.
