Sandlapper Classic
The inaugural Sandlapper Classic for high school track and field teams was this past Saturday and a great time was had by all.
Most interesting to me was Jasmine Stowers, a freshman from Pendleton High School who ran the 100 and 400 hurdles. As an 8th grader, she already held the state record in the 100 and prior to her heat, it was announced that a very special contestant was in lane 5. While everyone was trying to figure out what lane was number 5, someone suggested we just look for the girl in front.

Jasmine didn't disappoint and broke the track record by better than a second and secured the girls track MVP. I understand the Olympic committee knows about her talent and is very interested. Remember her name. UPDATE: Jasmine used the Classic as her warmup to the Indoor National Championships this weekend in Maryland (Nike Indoor Nationals), where she not only broke the all-time national record for freshman in the 60 meter hurdles, but she also finished third in the nation behind two upper classman, by a margin of less than 25 hundredths of a second.
In the overall results, our local Summerville High School won the girls team championship and Miller Grove High School from Atlanta won the boys team championship. What a fantastic event with over 30 schools participating in the inaugural, a lot of local schools but many others from around the State and the Southeast region. It should be even bigger and better next year.
