Summerville

Summerville South Carolina is a historic town founded in the 1700's by wealthy Charlestonians seeking respite from the summer heat of the city. It was thought the pines found in abundance in the Summerville area also offered some healing properties from the diseases of the day. The many flowers have now given Summerville its nickname of Flowertown in the Pines. Summerville is a mix of the old and new and the town is committed to preserving its Southern charm and historical elegance.

Summerville is a charming small town built around a town square surrounded by quaint shops with the Historic District featuring beautiful old homes. Summerville's location off Interstate 26 and only 21 miles to Historic Charleston placed it directly in the path of Charleston's growth, and this beautiful small town is now a popular suburb of Charleston offering all the suburban amenities you would expect yet retains a rare small-town feel. Dorchester County which includes Summerville has been the fastest growing county in the State of South Carolina during the past decade and is in the highly regarded Dorchester II school district is considered to be one of the finest in the State of South Carolina. Charleston real estate can be somewhat expensive but Summerville offers more affordable housing choices than many other communities in the Charleston area. The historic district of Summerville still has many original cottages (actually, some are really very large homes) from the 1700's and while prices can reach close to almost $1 million and a little higher, there is so much growth in Summerville that there are good housing choices for almost any budget with starter homes beginning in the mid $100's to more upscale developments at higher price points.

There are 4 golf course communities in Summerville including Legend Oaks Plantation, Pine Forest CC, Wescott Plantation and Coosaw Creek CC. Summerville is home to the only 5 Diamond resort and restaurant in the South Carolina, The Woodlands. Some of the most famous plantations including Middleton Place, Magnolia Plantation and Drayton Hall on historic Ashley River Road, Highway 61, are near Summerville’s western edge. Your choice of area beaches are only a short 30 minute drive from much of Summerville. Summerville is also partially located in Berkeley County and there is a lot of planned growth in the triangle formed by Summerville, Goose Creek and Moncks Corner. More on that in the section below under Berkeley County.

The annual Flowertown festival is held annually over the first weekend in April when foliage is at peak  is a wonderful event that draws a quarter million visitors to the Historic downtown square, with South Main Street blocked off from automobile traffic so everyone can walk safely toward the heart of the festival in Azalea Park.
