Charleston, The Holy City

Charleston is known as the "Holy City", one reason is certainly the number and variety of churches throughout the city and prominent church steeples rising over the cityscape. An even more important reason was the religious tolerance in Charleston to the practice of different religions.
Charleston was one of the first colonial cities to allow the Jewish people to practice their faith without restriction and Kahal Kadosh Beth Elohim Synagogue, founded in 1749 is the fourth oldest Jewish Congregation in America. Learn more.
Charleston was one of the few cities to provide religious tolerance to the French Huguenot Church and in fact, Charleston has the only French Huguenot Church in the country. Learn more.
Emanuel AME Church, founded in 1791 by African Americans is the oldest AME Church in the South and Old Bethel United Methodist Church was founded in 1797 by free black Charlestonians and slaves.

Built in 1752, St. Michael's Church is the oldest church in Charleston at the corner of Meeting and Broad Streets, the intersection is also known as the Four Corners of the Law.

Established in 1681, St. Philip's is the oldest religious congregation in Charleston and the church was originally located at the current site of St. Michael's.
