Johns Island is the second largest island on the Eastern Seaboard behind only Long Island in New York. For many years, Johns Island maintained a rural feeling and with the many local farms providing much of the fresh fruits and vegetables served in Charleston’s finest restaurants and elsewhere. Johns Island tomatoes are famous (and delicious). In recent years, while many residents would prefer to see Johns Island stay natural and undeveloped, Johns Island is inevitably seeing more real estate development.

Only 15 minutes to downtown Charleston because of the opening of two new bridges and with plans for the completion of I-526, Johns Island is becoming a sought after place to live with homeowners attracted by the pristine environment. Surrounded by rivers and traveling down winding country roads with great live oaks towering overhead, Johns Island is a beautiful place to call home. Lots are generally a little larger than found elsewhere in the Charleston area and the growth plan calls for growth to be limited to specified corridors leaving much of the island unspoiled.
The famous Angel Oak on Johns Island is believed to be over 1400 years old and the tree is 65 feet high and has a circumference of 25.5 feet. Its area of shade is an astounding 17,000 square feet (that is approximately 4/10 of an acre!).
Interesting neighborhoods include Gift Plantation and Grimball Gates backing to the Stono River, Headquarters and Rushland near the Wappoo River. On Johns Island near Kiawah Island is the former Hope Plantation, now renamed Kiawah River Estates with many nice golf course homes available.
