Daniel Island is a beautiful master planned island town within the city of Charleston. Eight traditionally designed residential neighborhoods encompass the residential community. While suburban by design, there is almost an urban flavor with condos and townhomes at the Island’s center and in many cases, located above businesses and shops. Developed with meticulous planning as a self-sufficient, small town uniting shops, businesses, schools, churches and residences, Daniel Island offers a true sense of community.
Set in a park along the Wando River at the top of Charleston Harbor is the 17 court Family Circle Tennis Center with a clubhouse, fitness facility and a pro shop. The Family Circle Cup, one of the top tournaments in women’s tennis is held every April. Blackbaud Stadium, adjacent to Blackbaud Software, one of the first businesses to move to Daniel Island, is home to Charleston’s professional soccer team, The Charleston Battery. Daniel Island is an outdoor sports lover’s dream with hiking and bicycle paths, boating, fishing, swimming and more. There is a private nature preserve, crabbing docks, community boat ramps and a marina is due to open soon. Fine dining abounds with fabulous Italian at Sienna. The finest Chinese restaurant in the Charleston area, Dragon Palace, has décor to match the food and a great bar and grill, Queen Anne’s Revenge, is my personal favorite in that all important food and drink category. Downtown Daniel Island offers residents a variety of businesses and services within walking distance of their neighborhoods. Shops, restaurants, medical centers, a Publix supermarket, office buildings and several of the areas largest employers call Daniel Island home. A new elementary school opened in fall 2006 joining Bishop England, one of the finest private high schools in the state. All builders on Daniel Island are carefully screened for quality and a strict Architectural Review Board must approve all design plans. Where To Retire Magazine twice included Daniel Island in “America’s Top 100 Master Planned Communities”. |
