Historic Downtown Charleston

With many Historic Churches in the historic distric, Charleston is often called "The Holy City"Charleston South Carolina real estate is among the most desirable in the country and nowhere in the area is that more true than in the Historic District of Downtown Charleston. Neighborhoods including South of Broad, The French Quarter, Ansonborough and others offer a diversity of housing options in a  historic setting not found in many cities in the country.

The Arthur Ravenel Bridge over the Cooper River between Charleston and Mount Pleasant South CarolinaWhile best known for the Charleston Single House, many examples of Colonial, Federal, Georgian, Greek Revival, Italianate and other architectural styles are represented in Historic Charleston. There is a variety of luxury real estate options including larger homes, smaller carriage houses, larger properties subdivided into condominiums and contemporary condos, many with water views. Near the Medical Center and the College of Charleston and along Upper King Street, there is significant gentrification taking place with lots of new retail and restaurants and major rehabbing of older homes with small pockets of new urban construction in the area. Just above the Crosstown, you’ll find a similar story taking place in Hampton Park and Wagener Terrace.

Charleston is well known for outstanding dining and just a few of my personal favorites include The Peninsula Grill and Magnolia's at the high end, SNOB is my favorite downtown restaurant for lunch and make sure to try the Hominy Grill for breakfast or lunch.

Historic Charleston homes for sale  South of Broad  Charleston South Carolina real estate

Quite simply the finest real estate in Charleston is South of Broad which is considered to be the the most prestigious address in the Historic Charleston Peninsula. Lining the boulevards or narrow cobblestone streets are graceful and elegant homes near the Battery and the Waterfront overlooking the Charleston Harbor. Several of America's most famous homes are located South of Broad including the Edmonston - Alston House with its commanding view of the Charleston Harbor, the  Heyward - Washington House, the Nathaniel Russell House and the Calhoun Mansion.

Altough not as well known as the neighborhood of the same name in New Orleans, there is a French Quarter in Charleston too. The French Quarter comprises much of the original walled city of Charlestowne and is enriched with historic church steeples, cobblestone streets, theatres, entertainment venues and galleries. From East Bay Street to Meeting Street and from Broad Street to the City Market, the French Quarter is a cultural mecca and both a chic and convenient address for residents of America’s most historic city.

Some of the most notable buildings in Charleston are located within the French Quarter including St. Philip’s Episcopal Church and the Dock Street Theatre on Church Street, and the Old Powder Magazine Museum on Cumberland Street.

Renowned for its elegant architecture and one of the most desirable addresses in the Historic Charleston Peninsula is Ansonborough. There is a range of stately properties in Ansonborough, many built during the city's economic and cultural heyday during the 18th and 19th centuries including Charleston's oldest private home, the William Rhett house which dates to 1712.

Nationally-recognized as a model for historic preservation, Ansonborough was the first suburb of the original walled city of Charlestowne and continues today to retain the distinctive look and feel of Charleston long ago. Restaurants, world class retail, galleries and museums are within steps of your front door.

With convenient access to MUSC, The College of Charleston and The Citadel, Wagener Terrace and Hampton Park Terrace are classic neighborhoods just above the Crosstown near the fabulous shopping, fine dining and entertainment of downtown Charleston. Affordable homes are still available in Wagener Terrace and Hampton Park Terrace and the area is rapidly gentrifying. Pockets of new construction are available and more plans are underway for a major redevelopment of a previously industrial area just to the North to become a new mixed use neighborhood called Magnolia.
